To kick of the 2015 LA Auto Show, Ford pulled the covers back on the new version of its popular Escape crossover SUV. The new model combines both aesthetic refinements and changes under the hood.

Of particular note is the new front end, which is consistent with other new Fords and their good looking hexagonal grille. It worked for the Fusion, Taurus, Focus, Fiesta, Edge, C-Max, and even the Mustang (sorta), so why not do it for the Escape too?

The 2017 Escape will offer three engines – all with four inline cylinders, but all pretty different. The base model gets a 2.5-liter, the middle engine is a 1.5-liter EcoBoost with 180 hp and 185 lb-ft. of torque, and the top of the line gets a 2.0-liter twin-scroll EcoBoost with 245 hp and a sports car like 275 lb-ft. of torque. All but the 2.5-liter will come in either FWD or AWD variants.

Inside, there’s an improved center console layout, with easier access to controls and more storage. It’s also the first Ford to offer SYNC Connect, which lets you remotely lock, unlock and start your vehicle (if you have the remote start option equipped). There are also a plethora of new tech and safety features available, including lane-keeping alert and assist, adaptive radar cruise control, forward collision warning, and a driver alert system to notify you if it appears you’re fatigued.

Parking assist has also been improved, offering help for both parallel and perpendicular parking. The EcoBoosts also come with an auto stop-start feature to reduce gas usage and emissions at idle – one of those features that’s good for the environment, but not exactly endearing. I’m hoping you can disable this like you can in other cars.

Ford will offer the new Escape in three trim levels – S, SE and Titanium, along with an upgraded Sport Appearance Package for the SE and Titanium.
