GMC truck fans should be excited to hear that the 2021 Sierra 1500 and Sierra HD pickups have gained new technology to help drivers tow more safely. On top of an already impressive set of tech, the enhanced trailering available on Sierra models includes a Trailer Length Indicator. The feature is enabled when the turn signal is activated. The center console will show a screen with a red overlay twice the length of a compatible trailer. The system is designed to show when vehicles are present and could interfere with the lane-change maneuver.
Jack-Knife Alert is also new for 2021, and tracks a trailer’s position in relation to the vehicle. If the front of the trailer approaches the vehicle’s rear, an alert is displayed warning of a potential jackknife situation. The Rear Trailer View features guidelines and Trailer-Angle Indicator to assist when backing the trailer up. The Rear Side View and Cargo Bed View have also been enhanced.
Other notable improvements for 2021 include increased availability of the MultiPro Tailgate on SLE and Elevation trims and new colors. GMC also notes that the Sierra 1500 AT4 now has 20-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires and off-road high-clearance steps.
Perhaps one of the most important changes for the 2021 Sierra 1500 is a significant price reduction for the optional diesel engine. For 2021, the 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel costs just $995 more than the standard 5.3-liter V8. That represents a price cut of $1500. The diesel engine offers 460 pound-feet of torque and up to 30 mpg on the highway, making it a very compelling engine option.
