I’ve always found race cars to be some of the most attractive cars out there. I have a particular fondness for the sleek lines of old race cars such as this diminutive 1936 Auto Union Typ C Grand Prix. What makes this particular race car replica even cooler is that it was made using 3D printing tech.

Audi used a selective-sintering laser that melted layers of a fine metallic powder to form the parts. This 3D printing method can create parts that have complex geometries that would be hard or impossible to make with conventional methods. The big limitation for now is that process can currently produce parts only as long as 240mm (~9.4″) and as tall as 200mm (~7.9″), so numerous parts had to be cobbled together to create the tiny “Silver Arrow” 1936 Grand Prix replica you see here.

Audi hopes to use a similar process in production car lines in the future.
