Ford Explorer Timberline is the Most Capable Explorer Yet

Ford has revealed a new trim for its popular Explorer 3-row SUV. The Explorer Timberline is the first of the series. Ford says the Timberline is the most off-road-capable Explorer it’s ever made thanks to increased ground clearance, improved approach and departure angles, steel skid plates, a Torsen Limited-slip differential, and Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires.

The SUV also features new shocks, springs, and stabilizer bars. To set the Timberline apart from other Explorer models, Ford has given it a unique available Forged Green Metallic exterior color and blackout treatment around the headlamps, tail lamps, and a black Ford oval. To match its exterior, the Timberline’s interior is trimmed in a Deep Cypress color.

With a ground clearance of 8.7 inches, the Explorer Timberline rides 0.8-inches higher than normal Explorer models and uses off-road capable heavy-duty shocks originally developed for the Police Interceptor version. The Explorer Timberline offers an approach angle of 23.5 degrees and a maximum departure angle of 23.7 degrees. The SUV has red tow looks rated at 150 percent gross vehicle weight and special front and rear bumper treatments.

Power comes from a standard 2.3-liter EcoBoost, making 300 horsepower and 310 pound-foot of torque. The only transmission available is a 10-speed automatic.

While the SUV includes LED fog lamps, it also has a wiring harness ready for dealer-installed Ford Performance auxiliary lights. Ford also fits the vehicle with a standard Class III Trailer Tow Package, making the vehicle capable of towing 5300 pounds. The 2022 Explorer Timberline will land at dealerships this summer. Pricing has yet to be announced.
