Tesla wants fewer versions of its popular Tesla Model S EV to deal with and has opted to kill off the mid-range battery pack option. The 85 kWh battery pack has been discontinued leaving just the 70 and 90 kWh batteries as the only options to choose from.
The elimination first surfaced in Canada and is expected to roll out in all Tesla markets. Tesla issued a statement saying, “The recently introduced 90kWh battery pack offers unprecedented range and value that has been well received by our customers. As a result, we will no longer be offering the 85kWh battery. Model S is designed to be completely customizable, ensuring that customers are able to build the car that meets their unique needs and Tesla is committed to continued innovation and the development of industry-leading technology.”
With the 85kWh version gone, Tesla now offers Model S 70, 70D, 90D, and P90D versions. The Model X configurator shows 70D, 90D, and P90D versions available for that vehicle. Tesla previously discontinued the 40 and 60 kWh battery pack options, as demand wasn’t great for those lower capacities, despite the lower price.
