Mini already tried to make us a roadster, that was aptly titled “Mini Roadster.” It was awkward, few sold, and the model was recently axed. The reason for this flop is pretty obvious: the Roadster offered nothing that the convertible didn’t with the exception of reduced cargo capacity. The gorgeous Superleggera concept actually did offer some things that the convertible doesn’t, like awesome style and reduced weight.

Now I’m happy to report that Mini has, according to a report from CAR Magazine, green-lit a production car based on the Superleggera concept. While Mini would love to do a hybrid AWD powertrain with an ICE running the rear wheels and electric motors powering the front, but given that the car will be based on the same platform as all the other Minis on sale, I’d expect a lot of front- and all-wheel-drive, non-hybrid models to lead the charge. I really hope the fin doesn’t get cut.
