Volvos Won't Need No Stinkin' Keyszoom in

Volvo has announced that it will be ditching physical keys in its cars starting in 2017. Rather than getting keys when you buy a new Volvo you will download an app and the keys will be delivered digitally. The cool thing is that you can have friends and family download the app and send the keys remotely if they need to borrow your car.

The app works via Bluetooth and allows the user to lock or unlock doors, open the trunk, and start the car. Volvo thinks this system will make it more convenient to rent cars too since the keys can be sent to you digitally with no need to wait in line at the rental counter.

Rental fleet testing will kick off this spring in Sweden at the Gothenburg airport. Limited vehicles will be fitted with the new key system from the factory starting in 2017. This is all fine and good as long as you don’t lose or break your smartphone. Fortunately, physical keys will still be available for those who prefer them, or want one as a backup for their smartphone.
