Volkswagen and LG Electronics have announced that they have teamed up for joint research on a new connected car service platform. The two firms will work together on a platform aimed at enhancing vehicle connectivity using cloud technology. VW and LG want the car connectivity system to be able to do things like control smart home functions, and will offer location based services.

VW and LG want to offer control of lights, security systems, and appliances all from the car on the road. This sounds cool and could mean that one day when you pull into your driveway, your VW could turn on your lights and tune to your favorite TV or radio station.

The firms also plan to develop a context-sensitive notification center to deliver messages and recommendations to the driver safely and in real-time. There is no indication of a time frame to bring these services to VW’s cars.
