VW Considering BUDD-e Microbus for Productionzoom in

I thought the Volkswagen BUDD-e concept that was shown off at CES 2016 was pretty cool, even if it wasn’t exactly the Microbus rebootI was hoping for. Rumors are circulating that VW is planning to build the BUDD-e concept on a modular electric platform.

As for what the production version might look like, Dr. Volkmar Tanneberger, head of electric development for VW said, “You will see a car that looks a lot like this, on the MEB platform, reach production. I can’t say exactly when, but 2020 or thereabouts.”

Tanneberger does say that the VW California and Transporter will continue as combustion powered vans. Since neither of those vans is offered in the States, I have to wonder if that means no BUDD-e in the US either. Granted if the BUDD-e is a pure EV, it probably won’t sell that way in the US anhow. I hope they make the BUDD-e in at least hybrid form for those of us who can’t get by with a pure EV.
