1988 No-Longer-A-Porsche Spexster

April 4, 2022 | Features, Memories

This fascinating “Spexter” by Spex Design Inc. (Montreal) recently appeared on PCarMarket, sparking a memory of seeing it at the 1988 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto! Of course, the 15 year old version of me was keenly aware that taking photos cost actual money to have developed, so I was very conservative with my photo-taking… but somehow, something about the Spexster made me take a photo! Strange, because it’s not actually a beautiful thing – in my opinion – but I guess I found *something* appealing about it!

I also seem to have picked up a sales sheet for the thing… and now, in 2022, it has surfaced… virtually as good as new!

It would seem the Spexster was based on (built on?) a Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 platform. Or maybe it just used some components from the Porsche.

However… a QUESTION!  Did Spex make more than one?  The car auctioned on PCarMarket (unsuccessfully, it should be noted) is silver… but the car I photographed in 1988 appears to be white.  Or is the Toronto Auto Show car actually silver?

Visit the auction on PCarMarket that ended on May 27, 2021.
