I’m already a huge fan of the Mercedes-AMG GT S, with its combination of power, agility, luxury, and exceptional design. I honestly didn’t think that there would be a way to make this German sports car any better than it already is. Well, leave it to AMG to take a car that is already pretty darned bonkers, and amp it up to 11. or maybe 12.
The new 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R takes everything we love about the AMG GT and pushes it that much further. Its 4.0-liter biturbo, dry-sump V8 now pushes out an astounding 577 horses, and 516 lb-ft. of torque, and it’s received significant upgrades to both its suspension and aerodynamics.
AMG spent a good deal of time testing and optimizing the GT R at the Nürburgring, and along the way, increased the car’s overall track width, widened the front spoiler, added a fixed rear wing, and a double diffuser out back. The front grille not only looks awesome with its GT3 inspired vertical fins, but has active shutters which help with both cooling and aerodynamics. Other changes include active rear-wheel steering, a nine-way adjustable traction control system, adjustable coil-overs, weight optimization, and more.
The AMG GT R looks especially smashing in its exclusive, Hulk-like color, dubbed “AMG green hell magno.” With all of its upgrades can now do 0-to-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, and tops out at an breathtaking 198 mph. Despite all of its track capabilities, the AMG GT R is fully street legal, and still offers the type of premium interior we’ve come to expect from Mercedes.
There’s no word yet on just how much the Mercedes-AMG GT R will sell for, but the GT S starts at $129,900 (USD), so I’d expect this very special model to cost quite a bit more.
