When it comes to off-roading, most SUVs never venture off the beaten path. Some outdoorsy folks don’t want to drive harrowing trails in the wild. They simply want to be able to navigate rough gravel and mud roads on the way to camping or hiking destinations. Subaru has a new version of its 2022 Outback called the Wilderness aimed directly at this sort of outdoor living.
Subaru says the Outback Wilderness is the most rugged and capable Outback it has ever made. The vehicle offers 9.5-inches of ground clearance and features an upgraded suspension along with all-terrain tires. Those are Yokohama Geolandar tires mounted to 17-inch alloy wheels with a matte black finish. Wilderness models also get a full-sized spare tire.
It also has a standard front skid plate and all-wheel drive. Subaru has also upgraded the suspension and bumpers on the Wilderness model, giving the vehicle an approach angle of 20 degrees, ramp breakover angle of 21.2 degrees, and departure angle of 23.6 degrees. The CVT transmission works with a rear differential with a final drive ratio of 4.44:1.
Power comes from a standard 2.4-liter turbo Boxer engine making 260 horsepower and 277 pound-foot of torque. The Outback Wilderness has a 3500-pound towing capacity and is EPA-rated for 22 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.
