The Karmann Ghia is one of the most iconic cars ever made by Volkswagen. Produced from 1957 to 1974, the 2+2 coupe and convertible cars are immediately recognizable and are a joyful little ride.
But even VW knew from the get-go that the Karmann Ghia wouldn’t keep up with high-end sports cars. In this commercial that dates back to the late 1960s or early 1970s, Volkswagen touts the economical pricing of the car but also embraces the fact that with its Beetle-sourced 60 horsepower engine, it certainly wasn’t the fastest car you could buy. Volkswagen fan beetlejuice150 managed to dig up this vintage commercial which features the Karmann Ghia getting stuck trying to overcome the simplest of obstacles.
I’d love to see a car company again embrace this sort of silliness in its commercials. We sure miss this kind of honesty in advertising.
