I live in Colorado Springs, and drive to Pueblo most days for my day job down I-25. There is a massive field right next to Pikes Peak International Raceway or PPIR that I’ve seen filled with Volkswagen cars a few times, only to emptied and filled again. I know the pics are a bit fuzzy, but that’s what you get when you use a camera phone at 75 mph when driving.
I’m not 100% certain, but I’m betting that massive field of cars is filled with the sad victims of VW’s diesel buyback program. There are teams working in that massive field as we speak right out of the camera range with bulldozers leveling off the land and clearing it of rocks. Exactly where the VWs sit now was a mobile building and a field festooned with rocks and weeds until a month or so ago. The building was demoed and the dozers cleared and leveled the land. You can’t tell in the images, but there appears to be a similar lot of cars in a field behind the grandstands.
I can only surmise that the field is being prepped for even more VWs to sit there until the company figures out what to do with all of them. As for why all these cars are sitting in Colorado of all places I don’t know. The location is right off I-25, one of the largest highways in the state that links three of the largest cities including Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and Denver.
Perhaps these are all VW cars from the front range, but I thought everyone in Colorado drove a Subaru Outback, so who knows. What I do know is that I saw two big rigs with full loads of more VWs heading to the field, and the hoard keeps growing.
You can check out the location on Google Maps. The latest satellite image appears to have been taken before the cars started showing up, though.
