Ford is the first major automaker to take advantage of lightweight and very strong carbon fiber wheels. Ford offers the wheels on its performance cars including the Ford GT and the Shelby GT350R. According to a report from GM Authority, the automaker has revealed that it is eyeing the use of carbon fiber wheels in the future for itself.
However, GM sees the value of carbon fiber wheels on cars other than performance and track vehicles. That means that we might see carbon wheels on normal GM cars where weight savings are important. These lightweight wheels might be right at home on EVs or hybrids where every pound saved means longer driving distances.
Apparently, GM has been looking at wheels from Carbon Revolution, the same supplier Ford is using. No official green light has been given by GM to begin producing carbon fiber wheels at this point. The big catch here is if GM can order enough wheels to bring the production costs down to a more affordable level.
