Hyundai Ioniq Breaks Hybrid Land Speed Record

When you say “EV,” you don’t normally think of a car that can reach over 150 mph. That is exactly what the Hyundai Ioniq HEV has done though. Hyundai took one of the cars and prepped it for a land speed record challenge out on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

The car went on to set an FIA land speed record for the alternative fuel category, though the hybrid did need a nitrous boost to help get it to that speed. With the ECU recalibrated, and speed governors off, the little Hyundai was able to reach 157.825 mph with a peak speed of 160.7 MPH. Check out the video of the record setting run in action:

Any time you need a parachute to stop a car, it’s fast. Naturally, Hyundai also outfitted the Ioniq with a roll cage, racing seat, harness, and fire-suppression system for safety.
