I’m a sucker for a hyperbolic car headline, especially on a video. I can just press play and let the superlatives wash over me. So naturally I clicked on Carfection’s M2 review with the header, “The Best M Car You Can Buy?” Not that it’s that big a claim, really—there are only a handful of new M cars on the market at any given time, and BMW wouldn’t really be doing their job if the latest M was not (thanks to the inexorable march of progress) the best. But, too late, I’d already clicked before I figured that out.

For the slightly hyperventilating title, Carfection’s Alex Goy is remarkably subdued in his remarks as he guns a gorgeous blue 2016 M2 through the Spanish countryside. The M2 was at the top of his list of cars to try out in 2016, what with the M line’s reputation for “silly performance, scalpel like handling, and a hint of heroism.” And the M2 does not disappoint. With a wicked exhaust note at low revs, the rear-wheel drive M2 has the manners of a daily driver but a naughty side in sportier driving modes that allows for hooning fun while maintaining poise at the limits. “When it is going hard, it’s not uncomfortable, it’s still manageable,” Goy says. “You can drive down the motorway in Sport or Sport-Plus and your spine won’t fall out.”
Compared to the M3 or M4, Goy says, “This feels more like a sports car, this feel a bit more hardcore.” So for Goy, the answer to the titular question is, well, Yes. For me, unfortunately, with M2 prices starting north of $51K, my bank balance makes the question moot.
