Let’s get this out of the way right up front; no that’s not the Fiat 124 Spider in the image here. That’s the MX-5 our man got to spend some hands on time driving in the mountains not too long ago. I don’t have the pics of the Fiat 124 Spider here because of copyright issues, but you can hop over and see them at Road and Track.
The car was recently spied by photographer Brian Willams during some sort of photo shoot; presumably, Fiat is making a brochure or promo video for the car. From what we can tell in the pics, it looks like the front end is much longer on the Fiat. Personally, I like the looks of the Mazda’s front end better. On the other hand, the rear end of the new MX-5 is the worst part of the car for me, and the Fiat version looks much, much better.
Looks aside, the real upgrade for the 124 Spider will purportedly come in the form of different engines under the hood. Word is that Fiat will make an Abarth version of this car with lots more power than the Mazda version can muster. The only real question is will that Abarth version be track capable without overheating?
