Inventor William Liddiard has created a set of wheels and tires that can be bolted onto a car, allowing it to do some really strange things. The tires rotate sideways on the rims and take the car with it.
It’s a very cool system that would make parallel parking easy and might be beneficial in other situations a well. It can turn on a dime, though those skinny tires with little contact area are likely to be a nightmare in terms of grip at speeds or in corners. Liddiard claims that the system applies 24,000 pounds of torque directly to the tires. How exactly all that torque is generated is unclear.
While these are only prototypes, the finished product will be able to be fit on any vehicle. Liddiard is currently trying to patent his invention and line up partners to bring it to market.
