A completely autonomous shuttle bus recently began testing on public roads in the Netherlands. Wepods buses can carry six passengers and are completely automated. There is no driver seat or controls for a human. Wepods are also fully electric with a 62-mile range per charge. Max speed for Wepods is 25mph, but in testing, it is restricted to 16 mph.
The bus uses a collection of cameras, sensors, radar, and detailed maps to navigate its route without a human driver. Six passengers can ride at a time and passengers can talk to a remote operator via an intercom if needed.
Currently, the Wepods bus is hauling passengers on the campus of Wageningen University in the Province of Gelderland. If testing goes well, the city might expand the route for the bus and add additional Wepods to the routes.
